Rough Ryder’s “Coal Miner” Half Hawk is a traditional pocket knife black jigged bone handles. The handles also feature nickel silver bolsters, a Rough Rider shield, and brass pins and liners.

The “Coal Miner” Half Hawk has two mirror polished 440A stainless steel blades. The master blade is a clip point and the knife also features a pen and sheepsfoot blade. The master blade also has a “Coal Miner” text etching. The blades each open with a match strike pull. Unlike a standard nail nick or long pull, a match strike pull has serrations inside the groove of the pull. These serrations allow you to strike a match with your knife. The blade uses the half stops and slip joints found in traditional pocketknives that give this knife a nice walk and talk. The handles of this knife are made with bone, which is a natural material and prone to cracking. Therefore, some knives may have cracks near the pins or bolster.

This half hawk knife is similar in pattern to a rope knife or cotton sampler. The pattern normally has two blades that extend from the right side. Like this knife, they generally have a sheepsfoot master and pen secondary blade. The sheepsfoot blade gives the blade a smaller profile than a hawkbill and the pen blade gives the knife piercing power. The pattern is also known as a loom fixer.

The “Coal Miner” Half Hawk is a perfect knife for a collector, or for use as an everyday carry. With its black jigged bone handle and contrasting shield and bolsters, this knife is a beautiful piece. Still, it makes for a strong and sturdy knife at a great price.
